Chat with Capcom’s COO, David Reeves, in Dubai لقاء سريع في دبي مع ديفيد ريفز مدير شركة كابكوم

Part of being a huge company’s COO is to visit different countries and look for developing regions with lucrative markets. Capcom’s COO, David Reeves, was visiting Dubai for the same purpose. Perhaps to enjoy the extra sunny weather as well. Luckily we managed to track him down at the end of his busy day and bombard him with questions.

Without official or proper announcement, we’ve come to know that Du, the second Telecom operator in UAE, is hard at work localizing two MMOs. [Hands-on] UFC Undisputed 2010 النظرة الأولى على لعبة يو إف سي أندسبيوتد

Being a long time Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fan, the news of a pay-per-view event coming to our shores had me frothing at the mouth. Finding out that some of the top fighters including BJ Penn, Matt Hughes and Anderson Silva would be on the main card with not one, but two championship matches scheduled was almost too good to be true. But then there was more – I found out that UFC Undisputed 2010 for the Xbox 360 and PS3 would be available for demo – and that was it, sold! Wild horses would not keep me from attending the event at the Yas Island in Abu Dhabi (the capital of Emirates).

Only in Dubai: God of War III banned and leaked فقط في دبي: لعبة “غود أوف وور” تُمنع وتتسرب بنفس الوقت

The God of War series has traditionally been banned in the UAE by the National Media Council, as it contradicts the country’s cultural beliefs and values. A direct result of such banhammers is that nobody actually cares except high street retailers, so people who actually want to play these games can get it from smaller shops or just import them directly from US or UK.

One of our readers in Dubai has shown his recently acquired copy of the game, a full week before official release date. A full week before the NMC even has a chance to ban the game.

Findings of a British gamer in Dubai – Part 2 اكتشافات لاعب بريطاني في دبي – الجزء الثاني

There is a big difference in the cost of games, and unfortunately for us, it’s more expensive to buy games here. Every time I want to buy a new game, I have to hand over more cash that I would in the UK, where the standard cost for a game is 40 GBP, and that includes to 17.5% tax the Government forces us to pay. 40 GBP is a fair bit of money, but I don’t often pay it for a new game. Many game shops sell the games for less than the RRP through some discount. Also, games lose a lot of value over time; a 5 month old game could have as much as 20% discount! But in this region, it’s a different story, one that doesn’t agree with my wallet. Shops here sell the game for the RRP set in the UK, converted to Dirhams which includes that extra bit of tax. Surely it’s not very fair that we should be paying the UK 17.5% tax, and it should be removed before we part with the money?

As an experienced British gamer, I have found that there are huge differences between gaming in the UK and the UAE.
