Aliens vs Predator (AvP) is a game that combines two of the greatest movie icons from the last two decades. This franchise reboot maintains the formula of being part stealth, part horror and part shooter. Aliens, Predators and Colonial Marines clash together on a planet that has set pieces from the past few films, such as the ancient temples from the first Alien vs Predator movie, and the jungles from the original Predator. While the story is not ground breaking, it does hold your attention until the end. Each species have their own short campaigns that overlap each other throughout the main storyline. This offers a different perspective on the same situation, while offering a unique experience for each side with vastly different gameplay mechanics. The Colonial Marine campaign is the most polished and the longest, while the Alien and Predator campaigns feel somewhat rushed.

Graphically the game is still a little behind some of the current gen games out today. Some textures don’t look right, and everything has an old school feel about it. However, the game does excel in the use of sound and light, which means I can look past the dated graphics and still see a nice looking game.

The Colonial Marines’ campaign starts off pretty well; you play as the clichéd rookie marine who must complete objectives for some voice over the radio. The first few levels are quite entertaining, and have some genuine scares. You’re in a base that’s been overrun by Aliens and all the lights have gone out, except your trusty flashlight. Rebellion did a very good job of creating a horror atmosphere with some good use of lighting and shadow. The motion tracker also plays a large role in creating the mood of the game as its steady beeping creates some very tense moments.

It’s a shame that the shooting doesn’t live up to the standard set by the in-game atmosphere. The shooting mechanics felt very old school, and don’t have some of the standard elements found in most modern day FPSs, such as crouching. Unfortunately the thrilling horror ride soon comes to an end after a few levels as the lights turn back on, and it turns into a generic shooter for the remainder of the campaign.

The Aliens campaign is the shortest and probably the weakest of all three. I guess it’s hard to create a good story from the perspective of a monster only feels hunger and is surrounded by tasty marines. The Aliens campaign is based around stealth; you crawl on the ceilings and make use of dark corners and your heightened senses to pounce on a marine. It is extremely fun to crawl around the rooms, stalking a terrified marine, only to leap off the ceiling and ram your tail down his throat. The problem is that it’s fun when it works. The Aliens campaign feels very clumsy with the controls, as the Alien itself is very inconsistent about what it will and won’t climb on. Sometimes I could run up to a wall and climb on it automatically, other times I would be forced to use the Right Trigger (R1) to attach myself to the surface.

Throughout most of the campaign it felt as though I was controlling a flying camera rather than a savage monster, which broke the illusion a bit. However, once you get used to the controls and act carefully, you can execute some awesome kill-moves right before you execute a marine.

The Predator campaign is also stealth based, but it revolves around your arsenal of weapons and gadgets, rather than climbing on walls and sticking to shadows. The Predator has many options to kill something, in fact too many. Sometimes you’ll feel overwhelmed with the choices at hand, and it’s hard to make a decision, especially when you must do it in a split second. The Predator also suffers from the same clumsy controls and inconsistencies as the Alien campaign. The poor level designs made it difficult to leap from tree to tree, for instance sometimes I could leap 20 foot off a ledge, and other times I couldn’t jump 5 feet over a small branch.

The campaign was still enjoyable despite the weak controls. It was more than fun to leap onto a marine and perform an execution move. The things a Predator can do to someone’s head in an execution move are brilliantly gory and satisfying.

Apart from the ranged kills, each species has some melee moves as well. The Aliens have a slow powerful attack and a quick attack, while the marines just have a quick attack move. Once again the melee system felt just as inconsistent as the regular controls. Sometimes I would perform a quick attack, only to have the enemy block it, and then hit me with a series of unblockable attacks until I died. Sometimes I would hit the enemy with a quick attack resulting in a one hit kill, other times it would seem as though it did nothing.

Overall the campaigns are pretty fun and enjoyable, and everyone will have their favorite side to play with, I think mine was the Predator.

The multiplayer is really fun, and takes full advantage of the differences with each species in a variety of game modes. You have your standard Team Death Match modes, but you also have ‘Predator hunt’, where a load of marines hunt down a lone Predator. You also have ‘Infestation’, where a group of marines are dropped on a map, and there is one Alien lurking about. For each kill the Alien gets, his victims also become an Alien, until there are no more marines left.

The multiplayer in itself is a whole lot of fun, but the flaws from the singleplayer campaigns are still present, which means that this aspect of the game isn’t going to steal much time from better games.

Overall though, the game is pretty fun. It’s graphically underwhelming at times, and there are several minor flaws in each campaign, but it doesn’t detract too much from general experience. It’s a nice addition to the series and worth a play if you’re either a fan or just enjoy action games.

During an interview featured in the latest issue of Edge magazine, expected to hit UK newsagents on March 16th, Codemasters Studios vice president Gavin Cheshire has revealed that the company’s currently at work on a sequel to Colin McRae Dirt 2. Interestingly, Edge magazine website refers to Codemasters as the last of the big British publishers!

More after the jump.

More after the jump.

Codemasters’ DiRT series is considered to be the best there is in the rally racing games genre at the moment, at least we believe so! DiRT is tentatively expected to be released by early 2011, and although no word yet, we can claim it will come out on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.

“There’s an overwhelming arcing vision to all of our racing titles, and Grid is incredibly strong, but we’re lucky enough to be in a position where we’ve got racing games in different areas. Dirt was a complete reboot – we threw away what was going on and redid it completely – and then we rebooted Grid because it wasn’t top gun, and then we rebooted Dirt 2. I’m not saying we’re throwing all the codebase away, but we’re throwing the thoughts away and coming out with something fresh and new. Because if you don’t innovate, you’re dead.”

Bioware recently announced their latest DLC for Mass Effect 2 called Kasumi’s Stolen Memory. The new downloadable content provides the latest, and final, character you can recruit for the ’suicide mission’ called Kasumi. She’s a human Thief who can be found on The Citadel.

Kasumi’s loyalty mission involves her and Shepard go on an undercover mission, posed as a couple, for an exclusive party hosted by some art collector. While there, Kasumi has to look for a safe which contains a special box containing some secret data on her previous partner. As movies have taught us, such operations never go down without a hitch, and Shepard gets into a tough spot as usual.

The DLC will be out on April 6th, with no pricing announced at the moment.

The Citadel.

From the quote above, one can guess that it will be a multiplayer demo, or at least have some aspects of it, going by the mention, or lack thereof, of the”map” coming out with the demo. The game is out on April 16th, and given the multiplayer maps are usually out well before a game’s release to stress test online servers, I’d say the demo will be out late this month of early April at the latest.

EA has released 5 new screenshots for its upcoming Medal of Honor, an all-new first-person shooter in the Medal of Honor series, slated for a 2010 release on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. The game will be a reboot of the series, set in modern-day Afghanistan. The game will introduce the Tier 1 Operator: a relatively unknown entity directly under the National Command Authority who takes on missions no one else can handle. The development team has been working closely with Tier 1 Operators from the US Special Operations Community since the earliest stages of development to create the most authentic modern war experience. 5 new shots and the official trailer after the jump!

Not that it matters much for the non-US gamers, but should the OnLive service pick up, it will revolutionize the video games industry as we know it, and things won’t be the same after OnLive debuts. After almost 8 years in development, June 17, during the E3 2010 show, is when the OnLive Game Service will be available to users in the 48 contiguous United States! Users will need to pay $14.95 per month, just to access to the service. On the other hand, there is still no mention for the price users have to pay extra to rent or purchase games. The first 25,000 qualified users who will register through the OnLive preorder site will have their first 3 months’ service fee waived, as per the blog post by Steve Perlman, OnLive Founder & CEO.

Speaking at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco few days ago, Perlman said that the initial service will be available in high-definition at 720p, while the 1080p resolution will take time, perhaps not until 2011. The minimum requirements for Standard Def (720p) video is 1.5Mbps broadband, while Hi Def (1080) requires 5Mbps. OnLive is claimed to be able to provide multiplayer gaming to users of PCs, Macs, and TVs – through a Micro Console TV Adapter from OnLive.

OnLive is the brainchild of the ex QuickTime lead developer, the ex-CEO of Eidos, and the founder of Mozilla.org. OnLive is an online gaming console that allows video games to be played in all of their HD glory. The service is accessible through broadband internet, to connect with the OnLive Cloud; a large number of servers crunching out videogames data, and sending it back to the console.

Will it work? That’s the 1 Million dollar question at the moment. For OnLive to work smoothly, it requires very high speed – and constant – internet connection. Currently the US (and a limited number of other countries) can provide such an infrastructure. Should OnLive prove its a real contender, many will follow suite and start providing similar solutions and hardware, and that will be the official demise of the Home Console Era. On the other hand,OnLive will cut out retailers, pirates, second hand sales, friend-rentals, etc, which benefit all the publishers greatly and generously.

Even if OnLive proves to be a landslide success, how many players will be comfortable with spending the monthly subscription fee. You can purchase the games online, but to keep playing them, you shall need to keep paying a monthly fee. Now the trend is to pay to play, like with WoW, and if this goes on, the monthly gaming bill can jump to scary figures. How long can gamers keep up with this model!

Yes, it is a nice idea, but the figures need to be tweaked, our pockets can’t take any more holes!

The God of War series has traditionally been banned in the UAE by the National Media Council, as it contradicts the country’s cultural beliefs and values. A direct result of such banhammers is that nobody actually cares except high street retailers, so people who actually want to play these games can get it from smaller shops or just import them directly from US or UK.

One of our readers in Dubai has shown his recently acquired copy of the game, a full week before official release date. A full week before the NMC even has a chance to ban the game.

At yesterday night’s press conference in San Francisco for the Games Developer Conference, Sony unveiled their long awaited motion controller, PlayStation Move, which was internally known as the Arc, until the trademark was denied to Sony.

Keeping in line with their biggest competitor, and also drawing inspiration from them, the PS Move looks much like the Wii’s motion controller and nunchuck at first glance. Subtle differences on the surface and huge technological changes inside make this a completely different beast however.

The PlayStation Move (right) and the Sub-Controller (left)

The first thing to note is that there isn’t any dongle connecting the two controllers together. Like the DualShock 3, the Move is also controlled via Bluetooth to the PS3 and its sub-controller. Furthermore, the controller has rechargeable batteries, again like the DS3 controller, and is charged via a Mini-USB cable. The ball you see on top of the main controller changes its colour based on your background, so the PlayStation Eye camera can track its movements. So, for instance, if your room is all plastered with pink paint and yellow furniture, the ball’s colour will change to green for better tracking. No doubt there are other sensors in the device for better motion control and depth of field tracking for a more natural experience.

The Move will be available in the following SKUs:

Camera + controller + demo disc for under $100

Just the controller for people who already own the PS Eye camera

Console pack with the PS Move controller included

Some games, perhaps Socom 4 and other Move specific games, will come with the controller bundled in

Speaking of bundled games, Sony will be launching the Move controller with 6 first-party games which truly show off the new tech. Some of the games of particular notice are Dukes, a boxing game; Move Party, uses the PS Eye for co-op multiplayer fun and Sports Champions, which I guess will be the biggest draw towards the Move controller.

Then there’s SOCOM 4, Zipper Interactive’s next big project after the recently released MAG. The game is set to come out some time later this year, probably near the launch of Move controller itself. Using both the Move and its sub-controller, the game basically plays like any other FPS previously released on the Wii, using the Move controller for aiming and the sub-controller for movement; basically adding more precision and fluidity.

Of course, Sony isn’t the only one developing games for the Move controller, with more than 36 third-party developers and publishers (pretty much everybody in the industry) coming out with over 20 games that will either support the Move controller or are dedicated for it, by the end of the year.

Check out the video below to see the Move in action, due out this fall.

(PS Eye camera).
Move.
