Ever had a crazy idea and wish it were true? Brütal Legend is a realization of that dream.
Tim Schafer has been long known in the industry for some of the most memorable games like the Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion series. So players of old should know the type of humour and eccentric characters he brings to life. On the other hand Jack Black needs no introduction.
Both of these celebrities combine to present Brütal Legend. One of the best action adventure games I’ve played in years. The game sees Eddie Riggs, a roadie for some lame metal band, being transported back in time to the land of Heavy Metal when a freak accident occurs during one of the performances.
The game get's gory only when it would look awesome
While you start out the game with normal hack and slash, and are introduced to free-roaming elements on your sweet hotrod later on, the major events in the game proceed through an RTS gameplay mechanic. Yes, Real Time Strategy. The game moves at such a smooth pace, and introduces little elements such that before you know it, you’re playing a proper RTS! Don’t worry though, as these RTS matches only happen during the final stage of a chapter. The rest of the gameplay is simple hack and slash and roaming the heavy metal world on your supercharged hotrod with machine-guns and flame throwers.
Roaming in the countryside
And that’s the essence of this game; everything is over the top and just as wild as your imagination. The gameplay always has a nice mix of all the different elements, and the sum of all these parts is an extremely engaging experience. You’ll never feel that a certain section is dragging out. And before monotony can set in, the story takes a complete U-turn. You start out by leading a revolution in the heavy metal land against the evil warlord, having a fun time with your ragtag group and blowing things up. All of a sudden people start dying and you’re dragged into complicated love affairs and painful betrayals.

As you can see already, the game looks very exciting. The art design is heavily inspired by Metal music albums, and some Goth thrown in for good measure. The music is all metal, 108 tracks to be exact. Let’s leave it at that. The voice-overs are excellent, and even though some big names in the industry have been used, the feeling they portray is very natural. We’re talking Pixar level of quality here.
In multiplayer, you can control your forces from the sky
The multiplayer mode is completely real-time strategy, so if you don’t like those parts, tough luck. Complicated though it is, I find the implementation of the RTS mechanics better than actual RTS’s on consoles, like the Command & Conquer series. However, it doesn’t come close to the natural feeling Halo Wars provides.
Your upgrade manager
The good news is that the game used Jack Black to some genuinely good use instead of his normal crazy antics which I detest in all forms. And Tim Schafer brings his distinct charm to the whole game. What Brütal Legend offers is an almost perfect blend of gameplay design, story, characters, and of course humour, making it arguably one of the best homage to Heavy Metal music in modern media.

هل راودتك من قبل فكرة مجنون وحلمت بتحقيقها؟ ستجد في ‘بروتال ليجند’ تجسيداً لهذا الحلم. ارتبط اسم ‘تيم شافر’ في صناعة الألعاب بالعديد من الألعاب التي لا تنسى مثل ‘مونكي آيلاند’ ويعرف قدامى اللاعبين حسه الفكاهي المتطرف وشخصيات ألعابه الغريبة، وطبعاً ‘جاك بلاك’ غنيّ عن التعريف. اشترك هذان الشهيران في تقديم ‘بروتال ليجند، أحد أفضل مغامرات الحركة التي لعبتها. تبدأ اللعبة بعودة ‘ايدي ريجز’ – مدير أعمال فرقة موسيقية فاشلة’ بالزمن للوراء لعصر موسيقى ‘هيفي ميتال’ عندما وقعت حادثة غريبة خلال إحدى الحفلات.
تبدأ اللعبة بحملة القتل والذبح المعتادة، ثم تتعرف – في وقت لاحق- على فتاة رائعة وتحصل على سيارة أروع للتجول بها في أنحاء اللعبة، وتقتل وتدمر كل ما تقع عليه عيناك. ستجد في هذه اللعبة خليط ممتع من عناصر مختلفة، لذا لن تشعر بالملل أبداً. تمر اللعبة بمنحنيات عنيفة، ففي البداية تقود ثورة في بلاد ‘هيفي ميتال’ ضد قائد عسكري شرير وتستمتع مع فريقك الأشعث بتفجير كل شيء، وفجأة تتساقط الجثث من حولك وتدخل في علاقة عاطفية معقدة وخيانات مؤلمة.
كما ترون، اللعبة ممتعة جداً، والرسوم فيها مستوحاة من ألبومات موسيقى الميتال وهذا ينطبق على الموسيقى التصويرية أيضاً طبعاً ولن أقول أكثر من أن هناك 108 لحناً في اللعبة، كما أن التعليق الصوتي عالي الجودة، واستراتيجيات اللعب الجماعي في هذه اللعبة متميزة ولكنها معقدة ولكنها ليست بجودة ‘هالو وورز’.
وظفت اللعبة ‘جاك بلاك’ توظيفاً عبقرياً بدلاً من جنونه المعتاد. تقدم لنا ‘بروتال ليجند’ خليطاً ممتازاً من التصميم الجيد والقصة والشخصيات وروح الدعابة طبعاً مما يجعلها أحد أفضل الألعاب التي تقتبس من عالم موسيقى ‘هيفي ميتال’ في الوسائط الحديثة.
المزايا:
• اللعبة مستوحاة من عالم موسيقى ‘هيفي ميتال’
• شخصية ‘ايدي ريجز’ المرحة الرائعة والتوقيت الجيد للدعابات
• تمـّيز القصة بالعمق على غير ما يبدو في بداية اللعب
العيوب :
• إعادتك للبداية بدلاً آخر نقطة حـُفـِظ عندها الدور إذا ذهبت خارج منطقة القتال
• البطء في الإنتقال بين المشاهد في المناطق المزدحمة
• نظام الترقية، كان من الأفضل إتاحة فرصة الدخول إليه بين المستويات
• RTS هو محور هذه اللعبة، لذا قد لا تروق لك إذا لم تكن من محبيه
